Athletes face both physical and mental challenges. Mental heath sports performance aims to assist athletes in improving concentration, confidence, relaxation and visualization in order to identify their own performance cues that can improve their overall athletic performance in competitive environments. The field of sports psychology assists athletes of all ability level with injury recovery, resilience improvement, and managing stress and anxiety that naturally occurs with performance in sports settings.
While sports performance therapy often uses techniques that are found in mental health, the difference in targeted sports performance therapy from traditional individual therapy is in identifying thought and skill building techniques that will ultimately be beneficial in maximizing performance and reducing negative feelings about sport performance that will eventually impact overall ability and performance outcomes.
